I wanted to mention this because while my analysis will be on the context and mapping of the 2020 election, after digging around I found that the 2016 election map and 2020 election map are nearly identical from a visual standpoint. Due to this issue, the visualizations of the map as a whole are affected by the omitted counties and states. Through the pandemic, some states didn’t report votes in ways that linked the votes to specific precincts in the state because of the widespread mail-in balloting, so the New York Times – which is the source that created the map – felt that country-specific data from those states could not reliably be mapped. There are some states that have been omitted from the county breakdown on the 2020 election map due to the ways the states reported votes. Not only that, but I believe this map and my greater analysis complement the blog thread as American political maps offer additional avenues of analysis on the rhetorical weight of their standing. I chose this map to be my “map of the week” because I think political maps are great examples of the rhetoric behind cartography. The map details data from “2,523 of 3,143 counties in 47 states, representing 89% of all votes cast” ( Park et al., “An Extremely Detailed Map of the 2020 Election”). The map I chose for my blog is a map of the 2020 election results (FIGURE 1). The background I provide on this topic is worded as such to allow for a deeper conveyance of my argument related to my map of the week and around the rhetoric of cartography. To preface this blog post, I would like to note that I do not mean what I say to be taken as a political message. If there are multiple options that score similarly, then additional factors such as cost or risk can be considered. This option should score highly on all of the criteria that have been established. Once all of the options have been assessed, it is time to select the best option. This can be done using a simple table or spreadsheet with each option being rated on a scale of 1-5 for each criterion. The next step is to assess each of the options against the criteria that have been established. These options can come from brainstorming sessions, research, or input from stakeholders. Once the criteria have been identified, it is time to identify the potential options that could address the problem or opportunity. It is important to ensure that all of the criteria are weighted equally so that no one factor unduly influences the final decision. ![]() This can include factors such as impact, feasibility, and stakeholder buy-in. The next step is to identify the criteria that will be used to assess the options. This will help to ensure that all of the options that you consider are relevant to the issue at hand. The first step in creating a prioritization matrix is to define the problem or opportunity that you are trying to address. How do you create a prioritization matrix? 1. Ultimately, the goal of the prioritization matrix is to help make sure that the right things are given the right amount of attention. A prioritization matrix for a task might consider factors such as difficulty, importance, and urgency. For example, a prioritization matrix for a project might consider factors such as timeline, budget, risks, and benefits. ![]() You can customize the matrix to fit the specific needs of the situation. After all, Minecraft being the ultimate creativity tool should lend you some amount of personal expression. With many modern houses, you see architects aiming to build a cool house that's unique. Having that in mind, why not make some bold choices, not only in the design and layout of your house, but the materials used? Make a mark on the world that stands out, as opposed to blending in. Attempting to build with similar materials, which just so happen to be those most abundant early on in your gameplay, it can begin to feel iterative and too similar to the last time you started a new world. With the structures that are naturally generated in Minecraft (at least at the time of writing), almost all of them skew heavily toward rudimentary, medieval-style structures with wooden supports and stony accents. Start with the Great Hall of Hogwarts, the drawbridge of Castle Greyskull, whatever it takes to start the process with a memorable section, and flesh it out from there. Second, I had to write in a different medium than the typical page. The materials I wrote-especially the host’s book-took on a number of different voices and styles, including everything from an instruction manual to a sales pitch. A murder mystery dinner game has to function as both a story and a complicated role-playing game. Looking back, I’m thankful that I took on this creative challenge because it forced me out of my comfy writer’s box.įirst, I had to write in a different form than my usual narrative prose. (When my friends hosted this, everything went well-until the uber-killer decided to knock off a dinner guest who is a great actress, who scared the heck out of her husband by pretending to choke to death!) Challenge and Reward Then I decided to have a false ending, where the first killer is only a pawn of the real killer, who gets the chance to secretly kill off another character before dessert! I added to the complexity by putting pieces of evidence in tiny envelopes that were taped to the inside of each character’s booklet. It’s actually eight stories (because I created eight characters) told in small chunks based on courses in a meal. ![]() Creating a murder mystery dinner party is complex.įirst, it’s not a typical story or book. I had recently participated in such a mystery dinner party that my friends bought out of a box, and found the experience disappointing and the “Whodunit?” reveal frustratingly complex. I accepted the challenge with smarmy arrogance. I took up such a challenge several years ago when some friends asked me to write a murder mystery dinner party. We all need to challenge ourselves if we want to grow our craft. This true for new writers working on a book for the first time or full-time writers plotting out their next manuscript. If you want to become a life long writer, it's important that you embrace new challenge. Just like beginning a new exercise routine, or adding different lifts or stretches to your regimen, challenging yourself with new writing tasks will cause you to grow in valuable and meaningful ways.īecause of this, it's likely you'll start to recognize when you're stuck in your writing comfort zone, and why too much of the same medium, form, and genre leads to unhappy places, like writer's block and burnout. I mentioned that there are three common boxes: medium (what you write on), form (how poetic your writing sounds), and genre (what norms your writing follows).īy staying inside these three lines, your work might be doomed to repeat itself or fall victim to old clichés. When we write the same thing in the same way for too long, the work becomes boring, which means all that hard work probably results in stories that are dull to read.Īnother drawback is a lack of imagination. One drawback to not challenging ourselves with different writing projects or writing goals is complacency. These three writing challenges will test and strengthen your writing skills. We only become better writers when we step outside our comfort zones. In order to stay sharp, writers need challenges to keep their creative juices alive and well.Īnd whether or not these challenges are daily writing challenges or something you find on social media without even looking for them, it's important that, as a writing habit, we tackle them head on every once in a while. This allows us to find a consistent voice and target our work towards ideal readers.īut staying inside these boxes without any deviation can have major drawbacks that threaten the quality of your writing, and the joy of writing itself. Are you looking for a writing challenge that really tests your writing skills? Something that pushes your writing process beyond national novel writing month (although trying out NaNoWriMo is a good challenge to face)?Īs a writer, you’ve probably heard this question: “What’s your genre?” Or maybe you’ve been asked, “What is your book about?”Īs writers, we tend to find a creative “happy place” and stay inside three boxes: medium, form, and genre. But the same goes for those “big-budget” books that actually have editors. As Anonymous stated in an interview with Publishers Weekly, “I gave the impression that, if they were to read this book, they might have more of an amorous chance with me.” So it was that no modern channel used and well-liked by the hipster (read: millennial) audience went untapped by “Anonymous.” Are there typos and occasional grammatical errors throughout? Sure. “Anonymous” even went the extra kilometer to draw in male readers by creating a profile on a dating website (apps weren’t as pervasive) featuring photos of an attractive woman suggesting she would go out with her suitors if they had read Diary of an Oxygen Thief. Though the strategy has been a long game–a decade to be exact–before Simon & Schuster (specifically their Gallery Books imprint) finally came knocking, “Anonymous” has clearly forged a very distinct path for other authors who can’t seem to get published by more traditional means, including garnering the interest of an agent who will hustle a project they’re doubtful about. ![]() In short, a likable milquetoast is still what lands someone on The New York Times bestseller list–unless the author is adept at guerilla marketing in such a way as to infect our brains with the image of his cover. Naturally, such a “hero” for a novel isn’t as palatable to agents and publishers as someone like Robert Langdon ( The Da Vinci Code was the bestselling fiction novel the same year “Anonymous” printed his own run). Then the glaze as they tried to hide how much I was hurting them. Till the big saucer eyes were looking at me. As he describes it, “I’d wait until they were totally in love with me. I wanted to be present on her wedding night. Anal sex? That would still leave her a virgin… But I didn’t like the idea of me as a sexual plumber. Lacroix, MN, where our narrator puts himself into a self-imposed exile).ĭiary of an Oxygen Thief isn’t particularly “good” or groundbreaking. In the style of Bret Easton Ellis, our rather psycho narrator frankly and unabashedly unfolds the tale with such foul sidebars as talking about how he must ensure psychologically damaging a virgin and her future husband for life by not actually fucking her: “Somehow it was obvious I that should leave her virginity intact. His desired audience, like Lin’s, was always built-in and targeted as the hipster set that Williamsburg has shat out into so many other places by now (maybe even St. The author was living in Amsterdam at the time, still working the ad agency circuit that cemented his alcoholism. “Anonymous” perfected what Lin did after publishing one thousand hardcover copies of the book when a friend of a friend offered to do so for free in ’06 (thank god not everyone is allowed the luxury of this offer or there really would be a lot of shite out there). ![]() And, to be frank, the assessment was not off the mark. You’re maybe perhaps the single most irritating person we’ve ever had to deal with.” Gawker also went on to flat-out call Lin a “retard,” back when you could still do that. I just want you to know that because of your ill-conceived self-marketing strategy, you have 100% guaranteed that I will never read your damned book. As Gawker did when they personally addressed Lin by writing, “I know you’re reading this. Put any drivel you want in it (as Lin so often does) and people will buy it so long as they can recognize its cover from the streets of New York, Twitter and/or Instagram (Facebook, not so much).īecause even when they mock your whorish marketing strategy, they’re still talking about you. The city of New York had not yet truly become bombarded by the marketing schemes that social media has made a part of our everyday existence.
